About Us

Our Members

BMED exists to bring together students from all faculties at the University of Manitoba interested in the biomedical field. BMED has members from the faculty of engineering, science, and computer science, Within the faculty of engineering, BMED has members from biosystems, computer, electrical and mechanical.

The team works to share knowledge and experience about the biomedical field gained through competing in biomedical design competitions, industry events, product development, tours and tutorials.

Our Mission

BMED believes in education through application, with multiple projects in simultaneous development to provide members with experience in a collaborative project-driven environment. Each project is developed in collaboration with a company or charity, and undergoes iterative phases of discovery, design, prototyping, and testing, allowing each member in different projects to have opportunities for contribution to each part of the design process.

Our History

In 2012, UMBES, the University of Manitoba’s Biosystem Engineering Society was founded. UMBES preceded BMED as the only Biomedical Engineering entity at the University of Manitoba. In 2019, former president Krista Bergen merged BMED and UMBMES into the current BMED. With the combined resources and shared goals between the two groups, the new BMED was able to generate more interest for the events usually ran by UMBMES.
